Why We Love St. Louis Union Station for Weddings
Originally opened in 1894, St. Louis Union Station has a history as remarkable as its architecture. Today, it offers couples a distinctive setting for weddings and special events, combining historic grandeur with modern amenities and plenty of room for creative design.
One of our favorite things about designing weddings here is the opportunity to think beyond traditional centerpieces. The scale of the venue invites bold floral moments, thoughtful architectural details, and installations that transform the guest experience from the moment they arrive.
Let's take a closer look at the spaces that inspire us most.

The Grand Hall: A Breathtaking Setting for St. Louis Wedding Flowers
The Grand Hall is our favorite space at Union Station to decorate, and it's easy to see why. With a sweeping archway, intricate frescoes, gold leaf detailing, mosaics, and art glass windows, this historic room is a masterpiece in its own right. At its tallest point, the ceiling reaches an impressive 65 feet.
Imagine the impression this room made when Union Station first opened in 1894. More than a century later, that same sense of grandeur creates an incredible backdrop for a wedding celebration.
Our approach to floral design in the Grand Hall is to embrace the scale of the space while making it feel personal to the couple.

Make a Statement with Floral Installations
When a room has soaring ceilings and architectural details this beautiful, it's the perfect opportunity to go big with your wedding flowers.
One of our favorite design opportunities involves the two tall wooden columns that conceal the projectors used for the Grand Hall's spectacular 3D light show. As the walls and ceiling come to life with a video-mapped display, these columns become natural focal points for the room. Covering them in lush greenery and flowers creates a dramatic floral statement that feels intentional and beautifully integrated into the space.
Depending on your wedding style, we might design a lush garden-inspired installation, a more refined arrangement of seasonal blooms, or a greenery-forward design that adds texture without competing with the room's historic details.
The goal is to create a moment guests will remember long after the celebration ends.

Design a Head Table That Deserves the Spotlight
The head table is another opportunity to make the most of the Grand Hall's impressive architecture. Because this table often becomes the focal point for toasts, photographs, and some of the most meaningful moments of the reception, we love creating a setting that feels every bit as special as the occasion.
When the bar sits behind the head table, we look at the entire area as one cohesive design opportunity. Adding floral arrangements and greenery to the bar counter and surrounding walls creates a beautiful backdrop that feels polished from every angle.
We also pay attention to the little details that can make a big difference. A silver ice bin sometimes sits directly behind the head table, for example. When the layout allows, incorporating flowers around this area helps soften the background and keep the focus on the couple.
These thoughtful finishing touches are part of what makes a custom floral design feel complete.

Go Tall with Wedding Centerpieces
With 65-foot ceilings at its tallest point, the Grand Hall can comfortably inspire a more dramatic approach to reception centerpieces.
Tall floral arrangements help fill the vertical space, create visual interest across the room, and make each guest table feel connected to the grandeur of the venue. Depending on your aesthetic, we might recommend elevated arrangements, sculptural branches, lush greenery, or a combination of flowers and candlelight.
We can also introduce larger structures, such as pergolas or arbors covered in greenery, to define particular areas of the reception. These installations help create a sense of intimacy within a grand room, making the space feel more inviting without losing its impressive scale.
The best designs balance the venue's architecture with the atmosphere you want your guests to experience.

The Grand Staircase: An Elegant Floral Moment for Cocktail Hour
Your wedding design doesn't have to stop at the reception tables. The Grand Staircase offers another beautiful opportunity to carry your floral vision throughout the venue.
Leading guests down to cocktail hour on the floor below the Grand Hall, the staircase can become an experience in itself. A thoughtful combination of flowers and candlelight adds warmth, romance, and a little extra drama as guests move between spaces.
There are several ways we love to approach this area:
A candlelit staircase: A generous collection of candles creates a warm, inviting glow as guests make their way downstairs.
Floral accents along the stairs: Flowers and greenery can highlight the staircase's curves and architectural details.
A statement at the curved landing: If you prefer a more concentrated design, the beautiful curved landing at the bottom of the staircase is an ideal place for a lush floral installation or a layered display of candles.
Whether you choose to decorate the entire staircase or focus on the landing, this is a wonderful way to extend your wedding aesthetic beyond the ballroom and create a memorable transition into cocktail hour.

The Midway: A Versatile St. Louis Wedding Venue with Room for Color
If you're looking for a spacious event setting with a different aesthetic, The Midway is another standout at St. Louis Union Station.
This expansive, approximately 43,000-square-foot event space features a steel-trussed glass roof that fills the room with natural light. Its open layout offers remarkable flexibility for weddings, receptions, and large-scale celebrations, with room for everything from intimate guest counts to events with thousands of attendees.
For weddings, one of the biggest advantages is the ability to host your ceremony and reception in the same space without requiring a traditional room flip. With thoughtful planning, your floral design can help define each area while maintaining a cohesive look throughout the celebration.
Unlike the ornate details of the Grand Hall, The Midway offers a more neutral backdrop. That gives couples plenty of freedom to experiment with color, pattern, and personal style.
Dreaming of vibrant pinks and oranges? A modern palette of citrus tones? Classic white flowers with sculptural greenery? The open architecture makes room for all kinds of creative directions.
We love the opportunity to build a design around a couple's personality, using flowers, linens, candles, and statement installations to bring the space to life.

Belli Fiori's Pro Tips for Designing Flowers at St. Louis Union Station
When working in a venue as expansive as Union Station, a few strategic design decisions can make a significant difference. Here are our favorite tips for creating a wedding design that feels intentional, balanced, and memorable.
1. Think Big with Your Statement Pieces
Large rooms need design elements that can hold their own against the architecture. We often recommend incorporating at least a few statement pieces, whether that's a dramatic floral installation, tall centerpieces, greenery-covered structures, or clusters of tall candles.
You don't necessarily need an elaborate installation in every corner. Instead, focus your investment on a few impactful areas that will draw the eye and create memorable moments.

2. Mix Table Shapes and Configurations
If your guest count and floor plan allow, mixing round tables with long banquet tables is a great way to break up a large reception space visually.
Varying table configurations creates movement throughout the room and helps the overall layout feel more dynamic. It also gives us an opportunity to tailor the floral design to each table style, pairing low centerpieces and candlelight with some tables and taller arrangements with others.
The result is a reception that feels thoughtfully designed rather than repetitive.
3. Consider the Entire Guest Experience
Your wedding flowers can connect more than just the ceremony and reception. Think about how guests will experience the venue as they arrive, move into cocktail hour, find their seats, and settle in for the evening.
A floral welcome moment, a candlelit staircase, a beautifully styled head table, or a statement installation near the reception entrance can help create a sense of continuity throughout the celebration.
At Belli Fiori, we consider how each design element works with the venue and the overall event experience, so the finished look feels cohesive from beginning to end.

4. Balance the Architecture with Your Personal Style
Union Station already offers plenty of visual interest, so the goal isn't to compete with every architectural detail. It's to create a design that complements the space while reflecting your personality.
For some couples, that might mean classic white flowers, lush greenery, and timeless candlelight. For others, it could be an expressive mix of colors, sculptural arrangements, and unexpected textures.
Our favorite designs find the right balance between the character of the venue and the details that make the wedding uniquely yours.
