Picture Perfect Country Wedding

By Laura Katherine Smith

Just last month we had the pleasure of working with Lilly + Sadie on their perfect country wedding day and have been anxious to share the stunning photos by Love and Perry. And what better way to share a couple’s wedding bliss than for one of the bride’s to shine light in to how it all began…

“I met my wife Sadie in graduate school in the social work program at Washington University in St. Louis. Little did I know when she walked into my first class that two years later we would be the first same sex couple to receive a marriage license in St. Louis! We had been planning our wedding for over a year, but when Judge Rex Burlison ruled in favor of marriage equality for St. Louis, we decided it was important for us to be legally married in Missouri while we had the opportunity. Although Sadie and I were, in the eyes of the law, a married couple, standing in front of our family and friends committing to one another was the most important celebration of our lives to date. So yes, we are two brides, we had two proposals and two weddings!” -Lilly

Lilly proposed to Sadie as Chex Pannisse in Berkeley, California, and it just so happens that the restaurant from that evening created the color inspiration for their wedding; sage, persimmon and champagne! We worked closely with Lilly to ensure that all the details were just right for their day at Three Barn Farm in Clarksville, MO. As much as we could help, we talked through everything from florals to the specific eclectic collection of plates Catering St. Louis offers clients at this picturesque venue. Lilly also worked endlessly to create beautiful and personalized DIY wedding accoutrements; crystal glasses and tea cups to then turn into votive candles, windows for signage (sanded and painted), wood burning love initials in an oak letter box, and beyond.

Not only did their experiences truly impact every decision for their wedding, but the dress search came from Lilly’s time spent last summer in the United Kingdom, where she fell in low with Catherine Deane. Thankfully, the designers’ dresses were available through BHLDN (who doesn’t just love everything they curate?!). Next came Sadie, what to wear?! Lilly shared with us “helping Sadie find the perfect wedding outfit was a priority for me as clothing for androgynous women can be a challenge.” And so they happened upon Bindle + Keep in Brooklyn and all worked out from there.

Flash forward to wedding day and these two looked stunning and utterly comfortable. I had the treat of driving from our studio in midtown St. Louis out to the country (appx 80-min drive) to set their wedding reception and help with the little floral details prior to ceremony start. As most wedding vendors know, working with clients is an exciting and fun process (especially when a bride wants an ombre color palette for her bouquet!). When it all culminates on their wedding day, if you’re lucky you feel a special connection, and want nothing more than happiness for the couple hope to make their day go as smooth as possible.
